Johan van Schalkwyk

Johan started his career as a Public Prosecutor in the Department of Justice. He was later promoted to the position of magistrate and served in this capacity in a number of towns in South Africa.

Johan’s Local Government career began in 1985. He served in many positions at municipalities as a Legal Advisor, Head of Legal Services and also as a Town Clerk. He has recently retired after more than 35 years’ service in Local Government.

Over the years, Johan has built a reputation as a “go-to man” and is widely recognised as a local government expert, specifically in local government law matters. He has also obtained a diploma in alternative dispute resolution through the University of Pretoria, in conjunction with the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa, which he has passed cum laude. He is a panel member of the George Branch of AFSA and is also an experienced chairperson and initiator in disciplinary hearings.

Johan’s areas of expertise include Local Government legislation, legal compliance, Supply Chain Management, Investigations of breach of the Code of Conduct for Municipal staff members and Councillors, disciplinary hearings, arbitration and mediation and the establishment of municipal courts.
